Cristiano Ronaldo’s Baggage Isn’t Worth It Anymore

Ronaldo and Manchester United appear to be at a breaking point after Erik ten Hag’s hard-line stance following another act of self-indulgence.

The problem for anybody signing Cristiano Ronaldo is that, no matter how big the club, it immediately becomes FC Ronaldo. Wednesday should have been about Manchester United’s extremely impressive performance in a 2–0 win over Tottenham, the best it has played under Erik ten Hag and arguably the most encouraging performance since those counterattacking displays in the early days under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But instead the headlines were, yet again, about Ronaldo.

The 37-year-old had refused to come off the bench with United 2–0 up. When Christian Eriksen and Anthony Elanga were brought on after 87 minutes, Ronaldo could be seen, standing in front of the wall of the Old Trafford dugout. A couple of minutes later, he walked down the touchline, proceeded down the tunnel and had left the stadium before the final whistle blew. After being disciplined by Manchester United Thursday, Ronaldo took to Instagram.

“I try to live and play respectfully towards my colleagues, my adversaries and my coaches,” Ronaldo said in a statement. “That hasn’t changed. I haven’t changed. I’m the same person and the same professional that I’ve been for the last 20 years playing elite football, and respect has always played a very important role in my decision-making process. … Unfortunately that’s not always possible and sometimes the heat of the moment gets the best of us.”

As apologies go, that was on the pathetic side of tepid. What was this moment of heat? Seeing his teammates play far better without him? Realizing that, no matter how vast his ego, he has become an encumbrance? This wasn’t a player lashing out after a bad foul; it was the temper of somebody deeply immature and indulged to the point that he cannot handle getting exactly his own way. There is, at least, an acknowledgment that he had acted disrespectfully, even if he didn’t seem especially sorry about it.

Ronaldo has done this before. He did it at Juventus in 2019 after Maurizio Sarri had substituted him for the second time in a week. And he did it in the summer, leaving at halftime of a friendly against Rayo Vallecano. ten Hag called that “unacceptable” and he has taken a strong line this time as well. Ronaldo has been sent to train apart from the rest of the squad, and he will not be part of the traveling party for Saturday’s game at Chelsea.

"I am the manager, I'm responsible for the top sport culture here and I have to set standards and values, and I have to control them. We are in a team,” ten Hag said Friday. “After Rayo Vallecano I said it's unacceptable, but he wasn't the only one. That is for everyone. When it's the second time it will have consequence. That is now what we did. We'll miss him tomorrow, it's a miss for the squad, but I think it's important for the attitude, mentality for the group."

Ronaldo concluded his statement with a pledge to “keep working hard in Carrington, support my teammates and be ready for everything in any given game. Giving in to the pressure is not an option. It never was. This is Manchester United and united we must stand. Soon we’ll be together again.” But it may not be as simple as that. What does ten Hag gain by keeping such a disruptive presence hanging around?

The manager’s hand, of course, has been strengthened by the fact that his side played so well against Tottenham. United now is demonstratively a better team without Ronaldo in it, and his sulks are only deflecting from that. Even former United teammates of Ronaldo seem to have turned against him over this. Sympathy has shifted from the superstar to the squad.

So what happens next? United has been open to selling Ronaldo since the summer. ten Hag was initially keen to work with him but changed his mind after the humbling 4–0 defeat to Brentford. Ronaldo has started just two league games this season. But the problem is, there are no takers. The only offer United received for him in the summer came from Saudi Arabia, but Ronaldo was adamant he would only leave for a Champions League club. None who could afford him were interested.

And the cost is a major problem. Ronaldo is on an estimated $600,000 a week. If United is to offload him, it would probably have to either pay off a substantial part of his remaining contract, which runs until June of next year, or subsidize his wages. But what value is there now in a superannuated superstar whose celebrity gravity is such that he destabilizes any institution of which he is part? It’s been very obvious how younger United players blossom when Ronaldo is not on the pitch, able to express themselves rather than service his ego. No serious club would want that, even if there will be those tempted by the social media engagements, the reflected glamour, he will bring.

Once, Ronaldo’s self-absorption could be forgiven for what he brought on the pitch. But as the tide of his talent goes out, what is left is a monstrous and expensive ego. ten Hag has shown great resolve to face it down; now, he must want merely to be rid of it altogether.

Ballon d'Or: Karim Benzema wins award as best player in world football for first time

Real Madrid and France forward Karim Benzema has won the Ballon d'Or - awarded to the best footballer of the year - for the first time.

Benzema scored 44 goals in 46 games as he helped Real win the Champions League and La Liga in 2021-22.

Lionel Messi (seven) and Cristiano Ronaldo (five) had won the award on 12 of the previous 13 occasions.

Bayern Munich's Sadio Mane, who was at Liverpool in 2021-22, was second ahead of Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne.

Barcelona's Alexia Putellas retained the Women's Ballon d'Or, awarded to the best best female footballer of 2022.

England Euro 2022 winner and Arsenal forward Beth Mead was second.

Premier League champions Manchester City, who had six nominees at the ceremony, were awarded Club of the Year ahead of Liverpool.

The Ballon d'Or is awarded to the best footballer of the year, based on performance over the 2021-22 season.

Monday's ceremony in Paris saw French F1 driver Esteban Ocon arrive at the Theatre du Chatelet with the Ballon d'Or trophy in a racing car.

Benzema is the first Frenchman to win the prestigious award since Zinedine Zidane in 1998. Zidane was at the event to present his countryman with the prize.

"This prize in front of me makes me really proud," said Benzema. "When I was small, it was a childhood dream, I never gave up. Anything is possible.

"I'm really proud of my journey here. It wasn't easy, it was a difficult time for my family as well."

Benzema was the overwhelming favourite to win this year's award.

His 44 goals included a hat-trick in 17 second-half minutes against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, and another away to Chelsea in the quarter-final first leg.

He also scored three more goals over two legs of the semi-final against Manchester City.

The 34-year-old, who has been at Real Madrid since 2009, is expected to play a key role for France at the World Cup in Qatar which starts on 20 November.

The Ballon d'Or is voted for by 100 journalists from around the world.

Warm reception for Haller

Borussia Dortmund's former West Ham striker Sebastien Haller, who has recently undergone chemotherapy for a testicular tumour, received warm applause from the audience when he walked on stage to present the Yashin Trophy to Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois for best goalkeeper.

Liverpool's Alisson was second, with Ederson of Manchester City and Chelsea's Edouard Mendy third and fourth respectively. Tottenham's Hugo Lloris was 10th.

The Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best performing player under the age of 21, went to Barcelona and Spain midfielder Gavi, who turned 18 in August.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, 19, was ranked fourth and England team-mate and Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka, 21, was eighth.

Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski won the Gerd Muller Trophy awarded to the best striker after scoring 57 goals for Bayern Munich and Poland in 2021-22.

The inaugural Socrates Award, a humanitarian prize, went to Mane for his charity work.

Five-time winner Ronaldo ranked 20th

Messi and Ronaldo have dominated the award in recent years, apart from in 2018 when Croatia midfielder Luka Modric won it.

Messi had already won the trophy more times than any other player and his seventh success in 2021 came after wins in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019.

However, he was not nominated this time after an underwhelming first season at Paris St-Germain.

Manchester United's Ronaldo, who last won it in 2017, was placed 20th of the 30 players nominated, the Portuguese's lowest Ballon d'Or ranking since 2005.

Hasenhuttl accepts importance of midweek clash with rivals AFC Bournemouth

RALPH Hasenhuttl accepted the importance of Wednesday’s clash with AFC Bournemouth but insisted he retains “all the belief” in what Saints are doing.

The St Mary’s side visit the Vitality Stadium five points behind their fellow south-coast Premier League rivals after 10 matches.

Bournemouth, first managed by Scott Parker before Gary O’Neil took over on an interim basis, were firm favourites for relegation before the season began.

They were defeated 9-0 by Liverpool but are the only team in the division to remain unbeaten since, despite a difficult summer of recruitment and many feeling they have a weaker squad.

Saints, who are in the bottom three with eight points, must start picking up victories and crucially against teams they are likely to be competing with come the end of the season.

"For us, it's a Premier League game and an important one,” Hasenhuttl said, asked if there is any added incentive given the locality and shared objectives of the clubs.

“We go there and I think we know that they are in good shape at the moment, but we go there like we have always gone into in the past with all the belief in what we are doing to make it a good evening for us.”

The meeting comes off the back of a 1-1 draw with West Ham United, at St Mary’s, that ended a run of four straight defeats in the Premier League for Hasenhuttl and Saints.

It could have been a first win since the August victory over Chelsea, after Romain Perraud put Saints ahead and Che Adams squandered two big chances.

"For everybody it is very frustrating because these are the moments where you can make a big step forward,” Hasenhuttl admitted.

“But it would still be a long way to go. There's no guarantee that you win games but it makes it a little bit easier. And then you can definitely play a little bit calmer but we are never in the situation."

He added: "Let's say every point we get is a point gained and we know that we need every point.

“We are now going to Bournemouth and then against Arsenal so another two games this week. We have to be ready for the Wednesday game, immediately focus is on the game and hopefully we can get a win there."

Fans hail Christian Pulisic as he gets his chance and instantly sets up Chelsea winner off the bench

Christian Pulisic has been praised by fans after an impactful substitute appearance Saturday, as the American came off the bench to assist Conor Gallagher's stunning Chelsea winner vs. Crystal Palace.

The American winger played just over 10 minutes after not entering the match until the 84th minute, but made his presence felt as he drove in from the left and supplied the pass for Gallagher's decisive strike inside the 90th minute.

Pulisic has now started just one of Chelsea's opening seven matches, but fans were quick to speak of his quality - and question that of a teammate's - after the tidy assist.

Fans used the assist as a reason to praise Christian Pulisic - and criticize Mason Mount

'Pulisic playing on his favoured left side & immediately gets an assist. It was never rocket science,' one fan said on Twitter.

'Pulisic should be playing more. Enough of those back pass style of play. We need players who want to take on defenders. Give me Sterling x Pulisic on either flank,' another said.

'Pulisic with more assists in 10 [minutes this game] than Mount in 400 [this season],' someone else pointed out.

The American has largely settled for sub appearances this season at Stamford Bridge, but could be given a lifeline by new manager Graham Potter.

He started just 13 league games last season and was used all across the front line at times by Tuchel, failing to nail down a regular role.

'I can only comment on him in terms of how he's been with me,' Potter said at a Friday press conference, hinting at Pulisic's sometimes frosty relationship with former manager Thomas Tuchel.

'Really positive, he's an intelligent guy, articulate, knows how to express himself. My conversation with him has been good and positive, I'm not going to judge anybody on what has happened in the past, I'm going to make my own mind up. Football hopefully decides.'

The American continues to be linked away from the club, with AC Milan reportedly eyeing him as a Rafael Leao replacement.

Repeat acts of Saturday's assist, however, would certainly help his status at Chelsea at least in the meantime.

The change that put Courtois back among the elite

On Wednesday, Belgium national team head coach Roberto Martinez spoke in glowing terms about his goalkeeper, Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois, who he believes has become even better.

The Spanish coach was speaking ahead of his side's upcoming Nations League game against Wales. He believes Courtois has grown a lot since the last World Cup.

"He's on top of the world," said Martinez of Courtois.

"He's in that moment of maturity."

Martinez chose to highlight an incredible stat which shows just how valuable Courtois can be to club and country.

In the Champions League, the Real Madrid no.1 has stopped 24 of the last 25 shots he's faced. No wonder that Los Blancos are the reigning champions.

Martinez believes that the 30-year-old's growth in recent years is a lot down to the mental side of the game, where he believes he has improved greatly.

"At the World Cup in Russia in 2018, he was chosen as the best goalkeeper and since then he has grown a lot in the mental side of things," said Martinez.

"The human side hasn't changed, but he's a player who's on top of the world and of his game."
